Presentation

The Bangladesh Krishok Federation (BKF) is one of the most important peasant organizations in Bangladesh, representing the struggles and aspirations of landless peasants, small farmers, agricultural workers, and marginalized rural communities. Founded in 1976 in the aftermath of Bangladesh’s Liberation War, the organization emerged during a period of severe rural inequality, when millions of peasants suffered from landlessness, poverty, exploitation, and lack of access to resources. BKF developed as a grassroots movement committed to defending the rights of poor peasants and building a just and democratic rural society. From its inception, the federation has focused strongly on the question of land rights. In Bangladesh, a large number of rural families historically had no access to cultivable land while vast amounts of khas land (government-owned fallow land) remained under the control of local elites and powerful groups. BKF became widely known for organizing landless peasants to reclaim and occupy khas land through collective movements and peaceful struggle. Over the decades, the organization has helped many poor rural families gain access to land for cultivation and housing, making land reform one of its central political and social demands. The organization also works extensively on food sovereignty and agroecology. BKF believes that agriculture should primarily serve the needs of people rather than corporate profit. It promotes sustainable farming methods, preservation of local seeds, biodiversity, and environmentally friendly agricultural practices. Through training programs, farmer exchanges, workshops, and community organizing, BKF encourages peasants to reduce dependence on chemical-intensive agriculture and multinational agribusiness corporations. The organization views agroecology not only as an agricultural method but also as a social and political approach that protects farmers’ independence and rural livelihoods.Climate justice has become another major area of work for the federation. Bangladesh is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, with floods, cyclones, salinity, river erosion, and rising temperatures severely affecting rural communities. BKF actively campaigns for the rights of climate-affected peasants and advocates for policies that protect food production, natural resources, and vulnerable populations. The organization has participated in national and international forums on climate justice and environmental sustainability.BKF also places strong emphasis on women’s participation in peasant movements. Through its women’s wing, Bangladesh Kishani Sabha, the federation works to empower rural women and defend their rights to land, livelihood, dignity, and political participation. Women farmers are encouraged to take leadership roles in social movements, local organizing, and agricultural activities. The federation recognizes that gender equality is essential for genuine rural transformation. In addition, BKF works on issues related to indigenous peoples’ rights, environmental protection, rural education, and social awareness. It organizes seminars, campaigns, cultural programs, and mass mobilizations to raise political consciousness among peasants and marginalized communities. The organization has also built solidarity with international peasant and social movements working on food sovereignty, land reform, and social justice.Throughout its history, the Bangladesh Krishok Federation has remained committed to grassroots democracy, collective struggle, and the empowerment of poor and marginalized people. Its activities continue to play an important role in the broader struggle for social justice, economic equality, and sustainable rural development in Bangladesh.
