A Land of History and Resilience

Located in West Africa, Benin (in Fon: Benɛɛto), historically known as Dahomey, is a coastal country. It borders Togo (west), Nigeria (east), Niger and Burkina Faso (north). Its administrative capital is Porto-Novo, and Cotonou is its economic hub.

Once a land of great history, Benin was home to the powerful Kingdom of Dahomey. Its palaces in Abomey tell the stories of the different kings and the Amazon warriors (Agojie). Behind this greatness lies the slave trade, which caused immense suffering — thousands of souls crossed the "Door of No Return", torn from their land into the unknown.

Despite centuries of slave trade, Beninese culture resisted. Voodoo, songs and dances crossed the ocean, rooting their echoes in other lands. The Agudas who returned from Brazil brought new colors, blending African traditions with Afro-Brazilian influences. Today, Ouidah, the mythical city of universal memory, celebrates the resilience of the ancestors and the dignity restored.
