Presentation

The Fondation pour la Promotion des Droits (FPRA) is an independent Algerian human rights organization founded in February 2024. FPRA works to strengthen the rule of law and protect civic space in Algeria through four core areas of activity: advocacy before national, regional, and international human rights mechanisms; documentation of human rights violations, with particular attention to civic freedoms and the situation of detainees; capacity-building and training for civil society actors, lawyers, and human rights defenders; and legal support to individuals and organizations facing judicial harassment. The Foundation's work includes an observatory documenting arbitrary detentions and restrictions on fundamental freedoms through a public database and interactive mapping. FPRA collaborates with a network of partner lawyers across several wilayas and with Algerian and international partners, contributing to a more open and rights-respecting environment for civil society in Algeria.

Mission

FPRA\\\'s mission is to promote and defend human rights in Algeria, to strengthen the rule of law, and to protect and expand the space available to civil society — by supporting human rights defenders, documenting violations, and engaging national, regional, and international mechanisms.ObjectivesDocument and monitor human rights violations in Algeria, with particular attention to civic freedoms (expression, association, assembly) and the situation of detainees, through a structured observatory with a public database and interactive mapping.Provide legal support and representation to individuals, activists, journalists, and organizations facing judicial harassment or restrictions on their fundamental rights.Strengthen the capacities of civil society actors, lawyers, and human rights defenders through training in human rights law, digital security, and the use of international advocacy mechanisms.Conduct advocacy before national authorities and regional and international bodies (UN, African Commission on Human and Peoples\\\' Rights, EU) to promote legal and policy reforms consistent with Algeria\\\'s international human rights obligations.

Participation in WSF 2026

FPRA wishes to take part in the World Social Forum 2026 in Cotonou in order to meet social movements, trade unions, and civil society organizations from Africa and beyond, and to strengthen solidarity in the face of shrinking civic space. We intend to propose a self-organized activity on the defense of civic freedoms and the protection of human rights defenders in Algeria and the Maghreb — freedom of association, expression, and assembly, judicial repression, and the situation of prisoners of conscience. We also wish to exchange on civil society responses to authoritarianism and the criminalization of activism, deepen ties with our networks, and build new partnerships across the African continent.
