COPAGEN (Coalition for the Protection of African Genetic Heritage) is a West African network that brings together farmers' organizations, civil society organizations, and NGOs to defend African genetic heritage and the rights of rural communities. It fights against GMOs and resource grabbing, while promoting farmers' seeds, agroecology, and food sovereignty.
Mission
• Inform, raise awareness, and educate the public about the real issues surrounding genetic engineering and the patenting of life; • Encourage African decision-makers to collaboratively develop, enact, and enforce laws protecting African genetic heritage and associated knowledge, and guaranteeing the strategic interests of local communities; • Develop alternative solutions to leverage local genetic resources and the technologies and knowledge associated with them.
Participation in WSF 2026
Organize an agroecological village, organize a regional forum for civil society actors on agroecology, facilitate panels, showcase local seeds, co-organize an event on local chickens, and organize a culinary competition.
